Animal Success Stories

As an all volunteer foster-based rescue group, successful adoption stories are the only compensation we seek!  Our Foster Caretakers, who spend weeks or months loving the animals in their care, always want to know how their “babies” are doing once they have found their forever homes.  We hope that the adoption of a pet is not the end of a process but the beginning of a relationship between A Second Chance Puppies and Kittens Rescue and our adoptive families.  If you’ve adopted a dog or cat from us, please share your story!  Success Stories and pictures can be sent to adoptions@asecondchancerescue.org.

Millie
Millie

Just a note to let you know that Katie [fka Mille] is doing very well. She is very well-behaved and, ;little by little, coming out of her shell. It became obvious that she had a negative set of experiences that she associated with her name, so it was changed to Katie to keep the ending sound, but changing the initial sound, hoping that it might help in the transaction. After doing so she immediately became more receptive to ‘conversation’, direction, etc. She is beginning to take food/treats out of my hand, which is a sign of significant growth since she has been very fearful around food, particularly when it brings her into arm’s length. It was unfortunate to find in the early days that she would hesitate retrieving a treat out of my hand, approaching in a crouching stance, then stopping about three feet out. At that point she would switch her attention from the hand with the treat to my other hand, as if she had previously been baited in with food only to suffer unwanted consequences. So, improvements in behavior around food is a very positive outcome, small promising consistent steps As with anyone, she responds well to patience and encouragement. Nina, her ‘sister’ is engaging with her more than she had with other dogs, actually being proactively playful, at times. Though they each have their own beds, they share the larger bed [Nina’s] at this point and Nina doesn’t mind. Katie loves the dog door, comes in and out of the house on a whim or to chase down a scent or a sound. This pack is happy and healthy! Janice, Nina & Katie Marie

Mickey

Hi Kathy,
Thank you so much for following up about Mickey. Mickey is doing great and we feel so blessed to have him as part of our family. He now weighs 17 pounds and is growing quickly. He is a very happy and energetic puppy (he also get alot of attention as the kids are home for the summer with him). I had sent Shelley some pictures of his first week at home and will be following up soon with some new ones which I will also send to you. He has been going to the vet and getting all his shots. He did develop a case of "puppy mange" which the vet tells us is probably genetic and is being treated for it. We have also enrolled him in puppy classes at Petsmart which truly is alot of fun for our entire family.
I will send you the photos very soon.
God bless,
Amarillys

Medley

Howdy all, While still a bit rambunctious, Medley is doing very very well and has become a very welcome addition to our family and is now dominating our lifestyle. She's coming around more and more to me, and is simply enamored with my 5 year old. She's great with the neighborhood kids and most visitors, and we're all very happy that we found each other.

Mini Me
Mini Me

Mini Me is doing very well and his name is Bruno now. He is very affectionate and always wanting to play. We took him to the vet and he had I believe "whip worms". We treated him and all seems well now. He gets walked 3 or 4 times a day and he thinks he is a full grown Pinscher...LOL...and he lets all the other dogs in the neighbor hood know this...He gets along and has bonded with our cats. We love him and thank you ! Phil & Carol Spinda
